And
here we are at the start of another year. With the Holidays
behind us (and if you're anything like me, well-intentioned
resolutions already faltering), it's time to think about
resolutions you know you'll keep. Travel to somewhere FUN comes
immediately to mind. And yes, educational as well as
inspirational. In other words EGYPT and JORDAN.
We
introduced two new standard itineraries in Egypt last year –
which take our two longer tours and add a very special, fairly
unique, experience: the cruise on Lake Nasser, in place of the
traditional cruise on the Nile. There's really no other way to
see these Lake Nasser sites, all of which were rescued from
submersion when the Lake was created by the Aswan High Dam. The
temples and tombs date mostly to the 18th and 19th
Dynasties and you visit them by motor launch from your cruise
ship. Best of all, you arrive in Abu Simbel to see these
magnificent monuments of Ramses II in the late afternoon when
the morning crowds are GONE. You have them as much to yourself
as possible and can wander and explore and marvel without elbow
to elbow tourists. The Lake Nasser cruise experience captures
the relaxed elegance that Nile river cruising was decades ago,
and the boats we use are superlative. You can read the story of
my cruise experience on Lake Nasser in January 2007 here:

-
The 12-day Nefertari Adventure has all the
sightseeing of our Ramses Adventure, substituting the Lake
Nasser cruise for the Nile cruise, and,
-
The 15-day Isis Adventure is our Nile Adventure, but
with the Lake Nasser cruise.

Tourism in Egypt has been BOOMING...and if you've written or
called me in the last 4 months you've heard this from me
directly. I think the combination of the traveling Tut
Exhibition over the past few years throughout the U.S. and all
the documentary specials on National Geographic and the
Discovery Channel with Dr. Zahi Hawass have kept interest very
high. The Egyptian Pound is tied to the U.S. Dollar and the
weakness (tanking is more like it) of the Dollar versus both the
Euro and the British Pound have made Egypt even more of a
bargain for visitors from the U.K. and the European Union. Hotel
space and cruise boat space has been at a premium (with the
possible exception of the Lake Nasser cruises as these are
relatively undiscovered...a great reason to investigate our new
tours!) and this trend looks to continue. My advice...plan ahead
as much as possible. I have wonderful contacts and so far have
been able to book my guests into their preferred accommodations,
but, that said, if you're thinking of going, please do get in
touch as soon as is possible.
And
now some pictures sent by some recent travelers! Thank you for
your submissions and for your willingness to share some of your
experiences!

Joanne
Kanady and her brother Jesse Talamantez in one of the
Khan Al Khalili restaurants after feasting on pigeon, an
Egyptian specialty. With Hussam Ghalwash one of our
Egyptologist guides. They traveled to Siwa, besides the
traditional Antiquity sites, and tried Dune Surfing! |
These
3 pictures were sent by Steve Ruegg and his daughter, Melissa.
Steve wrote from Egypt to tell us what a wonderful time they
were both having. This trip was a life-long dream of Melissa's.

Wishing you all...GOOD FUTURE TRAVELS!! And belated HAPPY NEW
YEAR!!
